Simplify Installation and Maintenance with Eaton Bussmann's New Air Conditioning Disconnects (ACD)

If you're looking for an economical and reliable solution for your residential air conditioning installations, look no further than Eaton's Air Conditioning Disconnect (ACD). This innovative product is made from lightweight and durable non-metallic PPE, which is resistant to heat, cold, impacts, and corrosion. The ACD has also undergone UL® testing and approval to ensure its toughness and durability in extreme frost and heat conditions.

But that's not all – the Eaton ACD also comes with a range of features that simplify installation and maintenance, including a visible on-off disconnecting means, easy-to-remove high-strength protective shield, and multiple mounting options. Additionally, the ACD is available in fused, non-fused, and molded case switch designs, so you can choose the right option for your specific needs.

The Role of Air Conditioning Disconnects (ACDs)

Air Conditioning Disconnects (ACDs) are located between a load center and an air conditioner. They provide a visible means of disconnect when performing maintenance on the unit. ACDs are an essential component of any air conditioning installation or maintenance project, as they ensure safety and reliability in the operation of the unit.

Range of ACDs Available from Eaton Bussmann

Bussmann offers a complete line of ACDs to meet the diverse needs of its customers. The different types of ACDs available include fused, non-fused, molded case switch, or three-phase designs. Fused ACDs use a fuse to protect the air conditioning unit from overloads and short circuits. Non-fused ACDs use a disconnect switch to turn off the power to the unit. Molded case switch ACDs are designed for larger units and can handle more power. Three-phase ACDs are used in commercial and industrial applications.

Non-metallic Enclosures

The enclosures for Eaton's ACDs are constructed of either galvanized steel or weather-resistant polycarbonate. Galvanized steel enclosures have a removable front cover for easy access to the disconnect and a padlockable door provision for increased safety and reduced tampering. Polycarbonate enclosures have a side-hinged door for easy access to the disconnect and are weather-resistant. Eaton has a white paper, Non-metallic air conditioning disconnect: debunking myths of thermoplastics (eaton.com) that does a nice job of discussing PPE plastics in touch enviroments.

This white paper debunks common misconceptions about the durability of plastic enclosures in outdoor electrical applications, specifically the use of NORYL family of modified polyphenylene ether (PPE) plastics for outdoor air-conditioning disconnects (ACDs). The paper explains the benefits of PPE plastics over traditional metal enclosures, such as improved dielectric properties, impact resistance, aesthetics, and corrosion resistance. The material properties of NORYL PPE plastics are examined, including their low moisture absorption, excellent hydrolysis resistance, flame retardancy, and suitability for a wide variety of applications. The paper also details the history of PPE in electrical applications, and its current use in a range of industrial and electrical applications. Six key benefits of PPE plastic enclosures for AC disconnects are highlighted, including impact resistance, corrosion resistance, fire protection, UV resistance, ease of modification, and aesthetics. The paper concludes that PPE plastics are a reliable and durable option for outdoor electrical enclosures, with many advantages over traditional metal enclosures.
